How to delete Slack messages

Knowing the fundamentals of Slack is critical if your company uses it as its primary communication tool. You might want to delete a message in Slack. Using the Slack desktop, web, and mobile applications, you can delete a direct message or one you posted in a channel.

Here’s how to delete Slack messages if you accidentally type a message in the wrong channel or conversation, or simply say something you regret saying.

About deleting messages in Slack

If you want to delete a Slack message, keep the following limits and restrictions in mind:

  • Any member can delete their own message, but not one shared by another member.
  • If you are unable to delete your message, the owner or administrator may have restricted this permission. Check with them for assistance.
  • Owners and administrators have the ability to delete messages from any member in public and private channels, as well as group direct messages in which they participate.
  • The ability to delete bulk messages is not currently available.
  • When you delete a message, the action is final and cannot be undone.

Delete messages in the Slack desktop or web app

Whether you prefer the desktop or web versions of Slack, they are nearly identical. The steps for deleting a message are the same.

Step 1: Open the channel or conversation in which the message you want to delete is located.

Step 2: Hover your cursor over the message to highlight it, then select More actions from the toolbar that appears.

Step 3: Choose Delete message.

Step 4: Confirm this action by selecting Delete.

Delete messages in the Slack mobile app

If you’re using Slack on your phone or tablet, you can delete a message with a few taps.

Step 1: Open the channel or conversation containing the message you want to delete.

Step 2: Tap and hold the message, or open it by selecting it and then tapping the Three dots.

Slide up the bottom window on a smartphone to see all actions.

Step 3: Choose Delete message.

Step 4: Confirm this action by selecting Delete.

Remember that just because you delete a message on Slack does not mean that the other member(s) did not see it first. Be cautious about the messages you send, especially in a professional setting.
