How to Leave a Group Text on Android or iOS
How to leave or mute group texting in Android and iOS is covered in this post. Unless otherwise stated, instructions apply to regular iOS 12/Android 8 and higher.
How to Escape a Group Text on Android
The Android stock messages app can be used by following these instructions. The procedure for exiting a group SMS may alter if your Android phone utilizes a different messaging programmed, such as Google Messages or Samsung Messages.
-
Navigate to the group text.
-
Tap the three vertical dots.
-
Tap the bell to mute the conversation.
- Until you return and hit the bell again to accept new messages, you won’t see any more in the group text. The conversations you missed will then be filled with the messages you received.
Leave a Group Text on an iPhone
If you have an iPhone, you have a few options for muting unwanted group texts.
Option 1: Mute Notifications
The first option on iOS is to mute group text notifications:
-
Open the group text you want to mute.
-
Go to the top of the screen and tap the group of contacts.
-
Tap the Information button (it’s located under the group).
- Toggle the Hide Alerts switch to the On position at the bottom by scrolling down.
You won’t receive a notification (and the associated text sound) each time someone in the group text sends a new message if you choose to Hide Alerts (or Do Not Disturb in iOS 11 or before). Open the group text to see the thread’s most recent messages. Distractions are reduced using this technique.
Option 2: Leave a Group Text on iOS
Even if you’re using the Messages app on your iPhone, it’s not always possible to truly end the discussion.
To leave a group text on iOS, you’ll need the following circumstances:
- You need to be in a conversation within iMessage as opposed to a regular group text message. You will be in a conventional group message and won’t have the ability to send a group text using Messages if some of the group chat participants use Android phones or other apps rather than iOS’s Messages app.
- A group text must contain at least four participants. The reasoning behind this is that, if a three-person conversation were to end, it would no longer be a group text but just a straightforward text exchange between two individuals. In any event, the option to Leave this Conversation is greyed out if there are three people in your iMessage conversation.
If you are able to leave a group text on iOS, follow these instructions:
-
Open the group iMessage you want to leave.
-
Tap the group at the top, then the Information button.
-
Scroll down and tap Leave this Conversation.
-
Tap Leave this Conversation to confirm you choice.
