Huawei’s New Folding Phone Is Lighter Than an iPhone 14 Pro Max

The newest book-style foldable from Huawei, the Mate X3, was just introduced in China.

The Mate X3, Huawei’s most recent foldable phone, is a remarkably thin and light book-style device. On Thursday, it was revealed in China together with the P60 series’ non-foldable flagship model.

A 7.85-inch inner screen can be seen when the Mate X3’s 6.4-inch cover screen is opened. Although having two screens, the Mate X3 is thinner when unfurled and lighter than the iPhone 14 Pro Max at 239 grammes (8.4 ounces) and 5.3 millimeters thick. This also implies that the Mate X3 is the lightest foldable phone currently on the market, a title Huawei previously secured with the Mate XS 2. As a point of comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold 4, Samsung’s take in this category of foldable, weighs 263 grammes and opens to a width of 6.3mm.

The Mate X3 also boasts a free-stop hinge, according to the manufacturer, which enables the phone to fold into a variety of orientations and gives it Samsung foldable’ Flex-mode features. A 50-megapixel primary camera, a 13-megapixel ultrawide camera, and a 12-megapixel periscope-style telephoto camera with a 5x optical zoom are all housed in the Mate X3’s spherical camera hump.

The Mate X3’s sleek hardware is admirable, but one of the major improvements is the IPX8 rating, which is still unusual in the foldable phone market. The only other smartphone with this grade is Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 series, which indicates the gadget can endure immersion in water up to 1 meter (3.2 ft.) deep.

Satellite connectivity is another noteworthy improvement, according to Huawei, it can send and receive messages. When customers are outside of the mobile network’s coverage area, they can send emergency messages utilizing satellites with the iPhone 14 series, which was the first major smartphone lineup to offer this feature.

Huawei has announced its comeback to folding books with the Mate X3. Instead of releasing a follow-up to the Mate X2 from 2021, Huawei went with the single-screen wraparound design of the Mate XS 2 last year. The fact that Samsung is once again using an inward-folding design suggests that book-style designs are what foldable phones from Huawei will look like in the future.

The base 256GB model of the Mate X3 costs 12,999 yuan, which is roughly $1,895, £1,550, or AU$2,850. A global debut is anticipated for May.
