Ikea Has a New Waterproof Speaker for $15

At 50% volume, the Appleby portable Bluetooth speaker can play music for 80 hours.

The Swedish furniture and food retailer Ikea is continuing its foray into the consumer electronics market. The $15 Vappeby, a mobile Bluetooth speaker that is also waterproof, is its most recent product.

According to a news statement issued by Ikea last week, the speaker, which is available in black, red, and yellow, can be paired with another Vappeby. At 50% audio volume, it can be played for 80 hours.

According to Ikea, the speaker has an IP67 water resistance rating, which means it can withstand being submerged in water for up to 30 minutes at a depth of up to 1 metre (3.3 feet). Regardless of the IP certification, consumers are cautioned against testing the boundaries of a device’s water and dust protection.

Since 2012, Ikea has been gradually enlarging its consumer electronics business. The business has released hubs for air quality monitors, bookshelf speakers, and hybrid table lamps and speakers. Ikea did not specify how much of its $43.5 billion in overall retail sales in 2022—an increase of 6.5% over the previous year—came from the sale of consumer gadgets. Similar to its furniture, Ikea appears to be undercutting the competition on price with the Vappeby. The Vappeby is far less expensive than other product on our list of the best portable tiny Bluetooth speakers.
