The underappreciated Amazon Sidewalk network is bigger than you think

Amazon Sidewalk, a shared network that keeps connected smart home gadgets, was originally introduced in 2021 and has been progressively expanding in size over the past few years. According to Dave Limp, senior vice president of Amazon Devices & Services, “many types of connected devices have been constrained by the range of Wi-Fi and the expense of cellular technology, which has hindered the ability to link devices like environmental sensors, leak detectors, and smart locks.” Sidewalk is intended to offer a safe, affordable means to create and connect a wide variety of new devices, and we’re excited to see what developers create.

The present coverage map for Amazon Sidewalk is the result of a partnership with a small number of developers, which only let a small number of smart home items to create and broadcast a low-powered signal for other smart home devices to connect with. But, given that Sidewalk is now available to all developers, anticipate to see a rapid expansion of that coverage map in the upcoming years.
